The Birth of the Universe - Scientific Breakthrough
by cofty inresearchers working with a telescope at the south pole beleive they have glimpsed light from the first "trillionth of a trillionth of a tillionth" of a second after the big bang.. a lot of work has still to be done to confirm the findings, but if it holds up it is one of the biggest discoveries ever.. _________________________________________.
...inflation came with a very specific prediction - that it would be associated with waves of gravitational energy, and that these ripples in the fabric of space would leave an indelible mark on the oldest light in the sky - the famous cosmic microwave background.. the bicep2 team says it has now identified that signal.
scientists call it b-mode polarisation.

Ex 20:11. Two big problems for WT creation tradition. What's their best shot?
by Open mind insomehow the significance of exodus 20:11 has slipped right past my critical thinking skills for several decades.
"for in six days jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and he proceeded to rest on the seventh day.
that is why jehovah blessed the sabbath day and proceeded to make it sacred.".

This is a good point OPEN MIND. Glad you brought it up.
JWs like to appear "reasonable" and not like "fundamentalists" (which is what they really are). In the end, you get a kind of pseudoscience-y mix of reality (the earth/universe is obviously billions of years old) and myth.
Ken Hamm really makes more sense. At least he sticks to the myth.

On the one hand, I feel sorry for you. Yes, why couldn't they just have you over for dinner and talk like human beings.
On the other hand, I see this Family Worship thing as a source of potential problems for the society at some point. I keep seeing families inviting other families over for FW Night and planning what topic they're going to talk about on social media. What you have then, really, is private study groups - something the society does not want.
Just wait: there'll be a Kingdom Ministry article about how FW Night is just for your family, and not an excuse to have your own private study group. That could be dangerous!

Worrying about whether your kid's going to Princeton or MIT is one of the best worries a parent can have.
Congrats and best wishes!

Well, I'm sure Flavia is a very nice person, and quite intelligent, indeed, if she was pursuing an "advanced degree."
Evidently. . . .
and unfortunately, she never acquired the critical thinking skills that a college education offers.

As a JW, What statements made you "stop thinking?"
by Faithful Witness inthought-stopping platitudes, like "we are in the last days!
"jehovah's witnesses are the only ones with the truth...".
what statements or claims did you use, or hear, that made you feel comforted by the fact that you were part of jehovah's organization?.
-
breakfast of champions
I wouldn't say this made me feel "comforted", but it did scare me away from critical thinking:
"That's how a 'spiritually weak' would reason on that" or "So-and-so is just 'spiritually weak"
Or my favorite: "Going to college is a sign that someone is 'spiritually weak'"
Those kinds of statements always bothered me because I didn't want to be a 'weak' person - I wanted to be strong! But when only 'weak' persons question things like the Genesis account of creation or the Flood, you just try to avoid thinking about it.
So the term 'spiritually weak' was a big thought-stopping mechanism for me.
BTW - I am writing this from my college library and am about to hit my first class of the day. . . .
Evidently, I am "spiritually weak"
